Last Friday, the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) launched its online survey where educators, parents and community members like you can comment on the proposed revisions to Ohio’s Learning Standards in English and math. It also allows you to see how the proposed revisions would change the standards for each subject by grade or topic. To review the proposed revisions, go here

The results:

  • The revisions were made by educator working groups in English and math, under the direction of education leader advisory committees
  • The proposed changes reflect the results of the public survey that was given earlier this year, where more than 1,000 suggested revisions were submitted by educators and the public
  • Most of the changes clarify text in specific areas and make text more appropriate for intended grade levels


  • This survey will close at 5:00 p.m. on August 1, 2016 and will be reviewed in early August by the advisory committees
  • This fall, ODE will send the final proposed standards to the State Board of Education and the Ohio House and Senate Education Committees
  • This process is expected to be completed by the end of 2016

After more than a decade of "No Child Left Behind," the reauthorization of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act has returned broad authority to state and local education agencies to shape education policy. ESSA provides an opportunity for stakeholders, from all perspectives, to collaborate with one another to inform decision-making, develop equitable implementation strategies, and build a system for long-term continuous improvement. With a lessening federal role, stakeholder input is increasingly important to ensuring equity and excellence for all Ohio students.

•    What are the key elements to effective stakeholder engagement as recognized by the many stakeholder groups represented in Ohio?
•    How can state and local stakeholders, particularly those from the most underrepresented areas, positively influence the decisions and changes that the Ohio Department of Education and districts will make as part of ESSA implementation?
•    How will Ohio ensure that all of its students have the resources and tools necessary to succeed, particularly for the most vulnerable populations including English learners, low income students, rural students, at-risk students, and students with disabilities?

Please join this important conversation, which will include updates from Lonny Rivera, Interim Superintendent of Public Instruction, Ohio Department of Education, and an overview of the new law from Former West Virginia Gov. Bob Wise, President, the Alliance for Excellent Education. The discussion will be moderated by Brad Mitchell, Managing Director of Innovation, Battelle for Kids, who will be joined by Chad Aldis, Vice President for Ohio Policy and Advocacy, Thomas B. Fordham Institute; Denise Baba, Vice President of Streetsboro City Schools Board of Education and President-Elect, Ohio School Boards Association; Marsha Mockabee, President and CEO, Urban League of Greater Cleveland; Michael Tefs, Superintendent, Wooster City Schools; and Kay Wait, Teacher and Instructional Planner, Toledo Public Schools.
